Introduction

Staffordshire University is a great place for your son or daughter to be a student. Teaching combines with a friendly and dynamic learning community to ensure your child gets the best from their university education.

At Staffs we believe higher education is for everyone. When someone applies, we take into account the complete package - life experience, personal achievement and skills, as well as academic ability.

We are sure you have many questions regarding your child's time at university and we hope the information on these pages will be able to answer them.

What is Staffordshire like?

There are two main libraries in Stoke and Stafford, plus dedicated law and health libraries and partnerships around the region. Specialist staff are available to give information technology advice and guidance.

The main libraries have 24-hour help desks and access to the library catalogue via the Internet.

  • A media lab with digital camera, video production and digital services.
  • Over 300,000 printed items and 2,000 current periodicals.
  • Open until 3am (Mon - Thurs and Sunday) in term time.
How good are the computing facilities and how easy is it to find a free computer?

Staffordshire is the fifth largest county in Britain with a population of over one million people. It stretches from Birmingham in the south to Cheshire.

It's an area of contrasts. It is home to Alton Towers, which is one of the most popular theme parks in Europe, and a neighbour of the stunning Peak District National Park. In terms of the number of interesting and exciting places to visit, Staffordshire can easily be compared to Manchester or Nottingham. Staffordshire is, however, noted for its close knit communities, and the friendliness and warmth of the people who live there.

Where is Staffordshire?

Staffordshire is at the centre of the country, which means that it is ideally situated for road and rail networks. Cities such as Liverpool, Manchester, Derby and Nottingham are only a short journey away. Two international airports are within close range, and London is just under two hours away by rail.

Where is Staffordshire University?
The University is based on three campuses in Staffordshire - Stoke, Stafford and Lichfield. The two main campuses, Stoke and Stafford, are 17 miles apart. The Stoke campus is in the heart of the city of Stoke-on-Trent and the Stafford campus is just one-and-a-half miles from Stafford town centre.
What is the Stoke campus like and how do I get to it?

The Stoke campus is on two sites, Leek Road and College Road, which are less than five minutes apart. Despite being so close, both sites have their own shops, eateries and Students' Union facilities. The campus is five minutes walk from Stoke, which has good local facilities, and 15 minutes walk from the city centre (Hanley), which has plenty of amenities.

Transport by bus from the campus to other parts of the city is very good, and the Stoke campus is adjacent to Stoke-on-Trent railway station (which is on the main West Coast line). The campus is also just off the dual carriageway that links Stoke-on-Trent to the M6, therefore making it easily accessible by car. Although Stoke has remained a safe city, with low crime rates, we take student safety seriously, with CCTV around the campus and special taxi provision for students at night.

What is there to do in Stoke-on-Trent?

Stoke-on-Trent doesn't have the usual impersonal city atmosphere. It is made up of six towns - Tunstall, Burslem, Hanley, Stoke, Fenton and Longton - of which Hanley is the city centre and the main shopping and commercial district. Stoke-on-Trent is commonly known as 'The Potteries' due to its rich industrial heritage and the number of ceramic manufacturers based in the city.

The city centre has excellent leisure facilities, such as the Festival Park complex, which includes a multi-screen cinema, bowling alley, dry ski slope and Waterworld. The development of the city's Cultural Quarter means that residents of the city have access to world-class arts at the Victoria Hall and Regent Theatre as well as one of the best museums and art galleries in Europe. Hanley also tends to be the focus of the city's varied and exciting nightlife.

Not far from the campus, in Newcastle-under-Lyme, is the New Vic Theatre, Britain's first theatre-in-the-round and one of the most highly acclaimed producing theatres outside London. There is a Warner Brothers cinema in the town, and a vibrant nightlife to be enjoyed there.

Sports facilities in the city are good and include several golf courses and driving ranges, snooker clubs, swimming pools and leisure centres. There are two home football teams to support, Port Vale and Stoke City.

When city life becomes too much, the countryside is not far away. The Peak District is close by, where outdoor pursuits abound, but the city also has its fair share of parks and gardens.

What is it like on the Stafford campus?
The Stafford campus is a more traditional greenfield campus, with everything you could need on site, including accommodation, shops, Students' Union facilities, sports hall and a new medical centre. The campus has successfully retained a relaxed, community feel whilst not being stuck out on a limb, a mile and a half from the town centre. The campus is self-contained, which means that crime is rare, and the town is also known for being friendly and trouble free.
How practical is it to travel from the campus to the town centre?
There are buses every half an hour to the town centre, although the walk into the bustling county town is very pleasant. The buses for the town centre call at the railway station, which is also on the main West Coast route. The town is not far from the M6, thus making it easily accessible by car. The townspeople are proud of the University, and the atmosphere is friendly.
What is Stafford like?

Stafford has a traditional feel, with plenty of history and an array of cultural events, which can often be enjoyed at The Gatehouse Theatre and Stafford Festival. The town has its own cinema and enjoys good sporting facilities at The Riverside Recreation Centre.

In Stafford, tradition is combined with a modern outlook - bistros by the river, wine bars and specialist shopping, with designer and leading high street stores. The lovely Staffordshire countryside is not far from the town, and Cannock Chase, an extensive area of wild heath and woodlands, is just to the south east of the town.

What about the Lichfield campus? Where is it and what is there to do there?
Lichfield is an historic cathedral city, which is located about 16 miles south of Stafford. There are many shops and restaurants in the city, as well as expanses of open water, green parkland and tree-lined walks, providing a good variety of activities to enjoy amid beautiful surroundings.
